This is a self-paced online course.  Once registered and payment received, the Georgia Tech CATEA office (trainingcore@coa.gatech.edu) will contact you to provide course access instructions.  Students will have 6 weeks to complete the course.

Course Description

Designed to bridge the gap between current research in the area of seating and mobility and clinical knowledge used during manual wheelchair prescriptions. The entire course was updated in 2011 to reflect the results of new research and incorporate the latest information on technology and clinical practice. Topics to be covered include wheelchair features, postural stability, propulsion biomechanics, wheelchair configurations, wheelchair standards and letters of medical necessity. The course is self-paced and can be completed on your own schedule.

What Is Covered

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss manual wheelchair frame types and features available to optimize function
  • Identify manual wheelchair configurations to maximize postural stability
  • Discuss efficient propulsion techniques
  • Discuss current research regarding repetitive strain injuries
  • Identify features available to decrease vibrations to the user
  • Discuss effects of wheel size and tire options on propulsion
  • Identify components of a wheeled mobility assessment
  • Identify necessary components of a letter of medical necessity

Course Materials

Student Requirements
Attendees will require a computer with an internet connection.

Each module is found on the course website. All material necessary to complete the course is found within the modules, which can be reviewed at any time after enrollment. The Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA) will contact each registrant with their user name and password.
