Important Course Information

This is a self-paced online course. Once registered and payment received, the Georgia Tech CATEA office (trainingcore@coa.gatech.edu) will contact you to provide course access instructions.

Course Description

This online, asynchronous web course will provide participants with up-to-date knowledge of Assistive Technology (AT) and accommodation strategies for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The materials and concepts covered are designed for those who work to support the independence of individuals with IDD including support professionals as well as family and friends of the individuals themselves. This course provides instruction regarding the proper application of AT and accommodation strategies for home, workplace, and community environments.

How You Will Benefit

As part of this course participants will:

  • Explore basic accommodation and assessment processes used to determine and implement accommodation solutions for individuals with IDD
  • Describe features that distinguish commonly used Assistive Technology such as computer access, wheeled mobility, and communication devices
  • Identify the barriers to independence for individuals with IDD in home, workplace, and community environments and recognize appropriate accommodation solutions
  • Understand the impact of policy and regulatory legislation on accommodation solutions for individuals with IDD
  • Have access to national, state, and local resources related to supporting individuals with IDD

There are 10 training modules. Each module requires approximately 1 hour to complete. At the end of each module is a quiz. Students must score 80% or better to "unlock" the next module. The modules include the following topics:

  • Communication Aids: system output, message storage and retrieval, physical access, and switches
  • Getting Around Outside: riding in family vehicles, basic community mobility, public transportation, and driving independently
  • Home Accommodations: bathroom access, kitchen access, and home safety
  • Workplace Accommodations: support surfaces, work surfaces, tools and materials, and employment-related resources
