Course Description
Understand the fundamental properties, operations, utilizations, and applications of antennas. Focus on intuitive physical explanations, and laboratory demonstrations. When equations are used, they are not derived. Instead, the significance of each will be explained; all terms will be clearly defined; and examples will be given to illustrate how they are used.
Who Should Attend
- Nonantenna specialists who want to get a basic understanding of antennas
- Anyone needing the necessary background to complete the Antenna Engineering Certificate
How You Will Benefit
- Gain a working knowledge of what antennas do
- Learn to construct a basic antenna
- Examine how antennas work
- Master measuring antennas
- Know when to use what type of antennas
- Understand how the environment impacts antenna performance
- Learn what to consider when choosing antennas for a specific application
- Learn the mathematical and physics principles needed for antenna courses
- Discover how to use computer simulation to analyze various types of antennas
What You Will Cover
- Antenna Definitions
- Low-Gain Antennas

The Instructors
Larry E. Corey, associate director of the Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory, or SEAL, at Georgia Tech
Research Institute, has more than 31 years experience in the design, analysis, characterization, and simulation of all types of microwave antennas. His primary research is low-cost phased array antennas for advanced radar applications. He spent four years at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, where he also directed research in low-cost and low-power density phased array antennas.
John K. Daher, a principal research engineer in GTRI's Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory, has more than 26 years of research experience in the areas of EMI/EMC, modeling, analysis, and measurement of electromagnetic effects on electronic systems, electromagnetic propagation, nuclear electromagnetic pulse, and high power microwave and RF weapon systems.
Glenn Hopkins a senior research engineer with GTRI's Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory, has more than 18 years of experience in the design, prototyping, and testing of array antennas and components. He has primarily focused on printed circuit architectures for array radiators, phase shifters and feed networks.
Jeff Kemp, GTRI senior research scientist, has more than 10 years of experience in modeling, analysis, measurements of antennas, and antennas in radar systems.
Barry Mitchell, a senior research engineer in the Electromagnetic and Antennas Division of GTRI's Sensors and Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory, was manager of the GTRI Electromagnetic Test and Evaluation Facility for six years. His responsibilities include management, operation, and repair and upgrade of the test ranges that comprise the EMTEF (Far-Field Range, Near-Field Range, Indoor Anechoic Chamber Range, Compact Range, and RCS/Antenna Turntable Range).
