Course Description

Explore military infrared, electro-optical, and laser countermeasures. Understand the issues, principles, and equipment designed to defeat weapons operating in the visual and infrared spectral regions. Focus on techniques that reduce the susceptibility of air and ground vehicles to acquisition, tracking, and homing weapons. Learn their limitations and integration problems. Get an assessment of their effectiveness, and study developing technologies.

Who Should Attend

  • Engineers
  • Scientists
  • Technicians
  • Managers
  • Marketing personnel
  • Military planners

How You Will Benefit

  • Choose the proper countermeasure suite for your platform
  • Compare the merits of different missile and laser warning receivers
  • Understand counter-countermeasure techniques employed by advanced threat missiles
  • Select the best flare type and dispense patterns
  • Understand the defeat mechanisms used by narrow beam and omni-directional jammers
  • Learn the differences between IRCM and EOCM/PIRCM systems
  • Understand the status of Active Protection System (APS) development
  • Assess the merits of emerging countermeasure techniques

What You Will Cover

  • Overview and Warning Systems
  • Threat Missile Characteristics and Countermeasure Decoys ,
  • Waveform Jammers and Imaging Threat Countermeasures
  • Laser Fire Control Countermeasures and Active Protection Systems

Course Materials

Participants receive a hard copy of all slides and a CD-ROM of unclassified slides. All slides have the instructor's text notes to eliminate extensive note taking.

Prerequisites

A technical background is recommended. Some familiarity with infrared techniques is assumed. Taking Infrared Technology and Applications is recommended.

Certificates

This course is:

Security Requirements

Applicants must have SECRET-level clearance, need-to-know certification, and be U.S. citizens. Defense contractors may meet the need-to-know requirement by having the Need-to-Know Certification and Security Clearance form signed by a Department of Defense contracting officer or an official monitoring a classified program. Government personnel can meet the need-to-know requirement by having a supervisor sign the form.

The Instructors

Dave Schmieder has been involved with infrared countermeasure development in every capacity from systems engineer to program director and has led efforts to design defensive suites for armored vehicles, helicopters, fighters, and high value aircraft platforms. He also has served on government source selection evaluation boards. Schmieder is a Fellow of the Military Sensing Symposia.

Darrell Lamm has served as Georgia Tech Research Institute program manager and technical director during various phases of the program to develop a digital simulations for the advanced threat infrared countermeasures. He has directed effectiveness studies for evaluation of IR countermeasures against ground-to-air and air to air missiles. Lamm holds a Ph.D. in physics from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Charles Carstensen is an ongoing participant in the development and validation of the DISAMS digital infrared missile simulation model. He is a task leader in the evaluation of advanced decoys for the protection of aircraft including the A-10, F-16, MH-53, H-60, C-130 and C-17 and recently received the Bill Goodell Distinguished Service Award by the IRCM Military Sensing Symposium. Carstensen holds a M.S. in physics from Ohio State University.
