Course Description

Multiplayer online role-playing games are being developed for training soldiers. Focus on the fundamentals of distributed simulation systems. Start with a brief history of parallel and distributed simulation research, then explore simulation systems. Study parallel and distributed systems from architecture and computing perspectives. Examine execution issues, including interoperability, scalability, and synchronization. Review industry standards, relevant standards organizations, and the simulation organizations leading their development.

Who Should Attend

  • Engineers
  • Scientists
  • Technical Managers

How You Will Benefit

  • Compare the different types of simulation used in today's applications
  • Explain the difference between parallel and distributed computer architecture
  • Describe the fundamental design issues associated with parallel and distributed systems
  • Understand the execution issues associated with implementing distributed simulations
  • Choose the right commercial standard for your application
  • Learn about the different simulation-standards organizations

Instructor

Margaret L. Loper, principal research scientist at Georgia Tech Research Institute and chief scientist of the Information Technology & Telecommunications Laboratory, has 23 years of experience in modeling and simulation. Projects include the Department of Defense High Level Architecture Federate Testing project, which consists of the process, tools, and procedures used for HLA compliance, and the HLA Federation Verification Tool used to assist federation developers during federation integration. Other projects include the M&S WebBook, Distributed Interactive Simulation Standards Development, and DIS compliance test procedures and tools. Current research interests include agent-based modeling for homeland security, cultural awareness modeling, causality and determinism in distributed systems, novel algorithms for temporal synchronization in parallel and distributed systems, and modeling methodologies. Loper earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Georgia Institute of Technology, a M.S. in computer engineering from the University of Central Florida, and a B.S. in electrical engineering from Clemson University.
