Course Description
Modeling is a way of thinking and reasoning about systems. It is a process that moves in evolutionary fashion from simple to more elaborate to reflect the complexity of the system being modeled. Examine the intuitive process by which scientists and engineers develop simulation models. Focus on modeling fundamentals.
Explore a range of topics, including philosophy and uses of models, the relationship of models to theory, model foundations, and techniques and formalisms.
Who Should Attend
- Engineers
- Scientists
- Technical managers
How You Will Benefit
- Learn about the history, philosophy, and principles of modeling & simulation
- Understand the simulation life cycle and where modeling fits in this process
- Explain how problems are formulated and how heuristics can be used to create models
- Describe the relationship between systems and theory and how assumptions are critical to forming valid models
- Choose the right modeling view for your application
- Assess different modeling techniques and mathematical representations
- Compare the different types of simulation used in today's applications
- Review special topics and tools used in modeling
What You Will Cover
- Introduction to Modeling
- Problem Formulation
- The Science of Modeling
- Model Foundations
- Mathematical Representations and Formalisms
- World Views
- Conceptual Models and Ontologies
- Special Topics
Course Materials
Participants receive a notebook with course slides.
Prerequisites

Instructor
Margaret L. Loper, principal research scientist at Georgia Tech Research Institute and chief scientist of the Information Technology & Telecommunications Laboratory, has 23 years of experience in modeling and simulation. Projects include the Department of Defense High Level Architecture Federate Testing project, which consists of the process, tools, and procedures used for HLA compliance, and the HLA Federation Verification Tool used to assist federation developers during federation integration. Other projects include the M&S WebBook, Distributed Interactive Simulation Standards Development, and DIS compliance test procedures and tools. Current research interests include agent-based modeling for homeland security, cultural awareness modeling, causality and determinism in distributed systems, novel algorithms for temporal synchronization in parallel and distributed systems, and modeling methodologies. Loper earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Georgia Institute of Technology, a M.S. in computer engineering from the University of Central Florida, and a B.S. in electrical engineering from Clemson University.
