Course Description

This course in the fundamentals of science and engineering is designed to help those persons planning to take the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (formerly the EIT Exam). This course is tailored for the "General" option of the FE exam. For those students desiring a discipline-specific review, six additional hours of instruction will be offered in the disciplines of electrical and mechanical engineering, if there is sufficient demand. You must be enrolled in this course prior to taking the discipline-specific review.

The course is taught in the form of a general review, with emphasis on the most essential theories and methods. The course material is not limited to the subject matter covered by the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination.

The class meets on the Georgia Tech campus on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Each class is held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. For review purposes, students will also be allowed access to an online version of a previously delivered course.

Course Topics

The following subjects are reviewed:
  • Chemistry–general inorganic
  • Dynamics
  • Electrical Theory
  • Engineering Economy
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Materials Science
  • Mathematics–algebra through calculus
  • Mechanics–strength of materials
  • Physics–mechanics
  • Statics
  • Thermodynamics–heat power

Faculty

The principal course instructors are well-qualified in their fields. The full course, sponsored by the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, consists of approximately 42 hours of instruction. The course administrator is Dr. W. Russell Callen, Jr., P.E., a professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He can be reached via e-mail at russ.callen@ece.gatech.edu and by phone at (404) 894-2919.

Online Version Computer System Requirements

Please review the following computer system requirements needed to successfully run this course:

  • 500 MHz Intel Pentium III processor or greater (supports simultaneous record/playback features)
  • 128MB of RAM
  • High-speed Internet connection (audio/video)
  • Full Duplex sound card and speakers
  • 65,000-color video display card set to display at 800x600 or higher (video)
  • Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows XP
  • Internet Explorer 5.X, except 5.5 Service Pack 1, or 6.0: or
  • Netscape 7.0, or 6.2.x Netscape 7.2x browsers will most likely work as well, but they have not been validated against WebCT at this time. Please also note that Netscape 6.0 and 6.1 will not work due to problems in their JavaScript engines.
  • You must have Sun Java Virtual Machine version 1.4.1 or higher installed. The Browser Diagnostics Test, located on the course web site, will check for this and will tell you if your version is okay. At this time, we do not recommend the 1.5 version of Java, but rather we suggest the last 1.4 release, 1.4.2.
  • Finally, if you are using a pop-up blocker, you must either set your blocker to allow the WebCT site (prod.webct.gatech.edu) or you will need to disable your blocker while using WebCT.
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • RealPlayer 10 or higher (available for download at ) http://www.real.com
  • If using Screen-Reader software: JAWS (v4.02 or greater recommended) or WindowEyes (v4.21 or greater)

Video Teleconferencing

Since people throughout the state are working towards the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, Georgia Tech would like to offer the Fundamentals of Engineering course over the Georgia Statewide Academic and Medical System (GSAMS) two-way audio/two-way video teleconferencing system. The course will actually be conducted on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, but can be simultaneously broadcast to GSAMS sites throughout Georgia. If you are interested in this option and there is sufficient interest in your area, we will make every effort to set up a location near you.
