Language Institute’s Intensive English Program: A Program of Excellence

October 21, 2015 | By Shamika Hill

The Georgia Tech Language Institute (GTLI) Intensive English Program (IEP) is this year’s winner of the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) South Region Award for Program of Excellence in the non-credit category. The award recognizes the IEP for exemplifying the best in instructional design and effectiveness in meeting an educational need, while improving the quality of teaching and learning.

A division of Georgia Tech Professional Education (GTPE), GTLI offers a variety of unique, high quality, cost-effective, non-credit programs focused on the English as a Second Language (ESL) learner. These programs are designed to meet the learning needs of matriculated and non-matriculated students, academic and business professionals, and industry leaders from all corners of the globe and Georgia Tech’s own campus.

The IEP has been one of the Language Institute’s core offerings for more than 50 years, but in the past two years, it was transformed into an elite program by undergoing an accreditation process from the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA). The program was granted CEA accreditation in April 2015 after satisfying requirements to exhibit best practices and demonstrate that it meets 44 specific standards.

An extensive revamp of the IEP led to an innovative new program focused on optimizing the learner experience for diverse groups of learners with varying goals and needs. The program renovation included substantial curriculum re-design, inclusion of new curricula, as well as the development of a new three-pronged instructional philosophy, which brings together three strands of thought on the teaching and learning of English as a Second Language. Three new tracks have been introduced – the foundation track, academic track, and specific purposes track.

GTLI’s IEP is considered a program of excellence because of its strong commitment to understanding and meeting the learning needs of its population with forward thinking instructional philosophy, curricular design, and student services.
