Course Description

A company's success is ultimately dependent on the ability of its executives to execute. Recognizing the importance of execution is just a first step - what companies continue to find is that the ability to execute is uneven. Fortunately, this skill - the ability to understand how to align strategy, operations, and resources - is one that can be developed. Georgia Tech professors will provide the latest thinking in how to develop the ability to execute.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Better understand how to align strategy, operations, and resources
  • Utilize the latest thinking in how to develop your own ability to execute as well as coach that skill in the teams you lead
  • Understand the best practices and frameworks for analyzing execution challenges
  • Identify the leadership competencies that are most closely associated with effective execution
  • Build the execution capabilities of a team
  • Utilize proven tools to evaluate the threats to effective execution at your company

Course Materials

Students will each receive course notes, strategy case studies, and relevant articles on strategy execution.

Instructor

Nate Bennett is the Wahlen Professor of Management at Georgia Tech's College of Management. He originally came to Georgia Tech to serve as Associate Dean, a position that he held from the fall of 1999 to the fall of 2007. Previous to his position at Georgia Tech he spent ten years on the faculty of the Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University. There he served as Ph.D. Program Coordinator for the Department of Management, Management Department Chair and finally as Associate Dean. He earned his bachelors degree in sociology and his masters in applied social research from Tulane University in New Orleans. He earned his Ph.D. in Management from Georgia Tech.

His research interests include better understanding how contextual factors influence work group effectiveness, justice in organizations, and more recently interpersonal dynamics within top management teams. He has published articles in many of the most respected academic journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Psychological Bulletin, and Journal of Management. He has also authored or co-authored pieces in the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, and Wall Street Journal. His research has been written about in those publications, as well as reported on Good Morning America and a number of business radio programs. He is the co-author of the 2006 title "Riding Shotgun: The Role of the COO" and the forthcoming title "The Career Game" - both with Stanford University Press.

Throughout his career, he has been deeply involved in the design and delivery of leadership development programs for executives in a wide range of organizations including GE Energy, St. Jude Medical, The Home Depot, Coca Cola Enterprises, Delta Airlines, Sun Microsystems, EMC, Microsoft, General Motors, IBM, NASA, the FBI, and many others. He works as a consultant to top management teams and as an executive coach through his firm Red Buoy Consulting, LLC.
