Course Description
Effective systems engineers excel in systems engineering and project management. What can you learn from systems engineering to become a better manager? How does a project manager manage systems engineering? Good systems engineering requires discipline in planning and organization. Learn to apply concepts to your
organization and how you manage and lead. Learn to apply management and development techniques used in many successful commercial and government programs.
Who Should Attend
- Professionals with several years of experience and a desire to better apply systems principles to their roles
How You Will Benefit
- Understand key systems practices as applied to management
- Understand team-based organizations
- Established methods for leading engineers and engineering teams
- Apply systems engineering to project management
- Know the importance of the system life cycle and project phases
- Effectively plan and organize a project
- Manage and verify customer requirements
- Learn practical approaches for managing risks and opportunities
- Develop key aspects of integrated product development
- Know how system architecture determines success of a system design
- Understand the importance (and threat) of software in complex systems
What You Will Cover
- Leading Engineering Teams
- Systems Engineering Management
Course Materials
Participants receive a CD-ROM and notebook with lecture slides.
Prerequisites
Fundamentals of Modern Systems Engineering is recommended.
Certificate

Instructors
Carlee Bishop, director of the curriculum development for the professional master's in systems engineering and certificate programs, has more than 24 years of professional military and defense-related leadership and management experience that includes directing studies and analysis efforts for headquarters European Command, managing formal flight training programs for more than 800 students, and directing college-level programs in engineering. She has more than 11 years of teaching experience that includes five and half years teaching astronautical engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy, five plus years of flight instructor and examiner experience in C-141 Flight Training Programs, and one year teaching Space Systems Design at Georgia Institute of Technology. A command pilot with approximately 3,000 hours in C-141, T-41, TG-7, T-38, and T-37 aircraft, her service medals include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. She earned a B.S. in electrical engineering at the Air Force Academy, a M.S.E.E. at Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. at Auburn University.
Steven Cross, a Georgia Institute of Technology vice president and director of Georgia Tech Research Institute, holds faculty appointments as a professor in industrial and systems engineering and computer science. Before joining Georgia Tech in 2003, he was the director and C.E.O. of the Software Engineering Institute, a federally funded research and development center at Carnegie Mellon University. An IEEE Fellow, Cross serves on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency Panel for Information Science and Technology. A retired officer, Cross attended the Air Force Test Pilot School (Flight Test Engineer Course) and served in various R&D assignments as a software engineer (F-16, F-15, and B-1A programs), flight test engineer (Air Launched Cruise Missile program), assistant professor, research manager (Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories), and DARPA program manager. Cross received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1983, his M.S.E.E. from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1977, and his B.S.E.E. from the University of Cincinnati in 1974.
Tom McDermott, director of research and deputy director of Georgia Tech Research Institute's Electronic Systems Laboratory and GTRI principal research engineer, has 23 years of experience in the development and management of complex systems, focusing
on aircraft avionics, mission planning, and command and control. McDermott has developed a broad level of experience in many engineering disciplines in his career, including systems architecture, systems engineering process, software engineering, system simulation and modeling, computer architecture, computer network design, avionics architecture, electronics mechanical design and manufacturing, and engineering process improvement. He holds a B.S. in physics and M.S. in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.
