Course Description
Managers today must be skilled in leading change at all levels of the organization. This action learning workshop provides the strategies and tools for effectively planning, communicating, and implementing a major change initiative. Key content areas include:
- Understanding the business drivers for change
- Assessing the political landscape for change
- Understating the different stages and roles in change implementation
- Proven tools for measuring change progress and outcomes
- Developing versatility in change leadership behaviors
Learning Objectives
Upon program completion, the participants will be able to:
- Develop an action plan for communicating and implementing a major change initiative.
- Identify the key change management roles and clearly communicate roles and responsibilities to supervisors and subordinates
- Develop effective strategies for overcoming resistance to change
- Design metrics and objectives that measure progress towards the change initiatives
- Identify resources that can help a manager effectively implement change
Computer Simulation
This workshop includes the ExperienceChange™ simulator. The simulator allows program participants to build on their classroom experience and learn by doing. Each team, as change consultants hired by a fictional company, will be required to plan and implement a strategic shift necessary to save the company. With limited time and budget each team must quickly identify the issues, create a change plan, and implement the plan in the face of company-wide resistance. The teams will experience firsthand the dynamics of managing an important project in an environment of rapid change, uncertainty and risk.
Student Requirements
Students must complete pre-course readings include the John Smithers HBR case.
Course Materials
Students will each receive copies of the course notes and case studies.
Course Fee
The course fee includes workshop tuition, instructional materials, case studies, lunch, refreshments, parking, and Internet access.

Instructor
Nate Bennett is the Wahlen Professor of Management at Georgia Tech's College of Management. He originally came to Georgia Tech to serve as Associate Dean, a position that he held from the fall of 1999 to the fall of 2007. Previous to his position at Georgia Tech he spent ten years on the faculty of the Ourso College of Business at Louisiana State University. There he served as Ph.D. Program Coordinator for the Department of Management, Management Department Chair and finally as Associate Dean. He earned his bachelors degree in sociology and his masters in applied social research from Tulane University in New Orleans. He earned his Ph.D. in Management from Georgia Tech.
His research interests include better understanding how contextual factors influence work group effectiveness, justice in organizations, and more recently interpersonal dynamics within top management teams. He has published articles in many of the most respected academic journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Psychological Bulletin, and Journal of Management. He has also authored or co-authored pieces in the Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, and Wall Street Journal. His research has been written about in those publications, as well as reported on Good Morning America and a number of business radio programs. He is the co-author of the 2006 title "Riding Shotgun: The Role of the COO" and the forthcoming title "The Career Game" - both with Stanford University Press.
Throughout his career, he has been deeply involved in the design and delivery of leadership development programs for executives in a wide range of organizations including GE Energy, St. Jude Medical, The Home Depot, Coca Cola Enterprises, Delta Airlines, Sun Microsystems, EMC, Microsoft, General Motors, IBM, NASA, the FBI, and many others. He works as a consultant to top management teams and as an executive coach through his firm Red Buoy Consulting, LLC.
