Course Description
This 1.75 day course explores the theory and application of the target acquisition performance models developed by the Army's Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate at Fort Belvoir, Virgina. These models are published by SENSIAC at Georgia Tech Research Institute. Learn how the target acquisition performance (the range at which a target will be detected or identified) is predicted based on the image quality provided by the sensor.
Who Should Attend
- Design engineers
- Systems analysts
- Engineers
- Managers
How You Will Benefit
- Model an EO imager to determine its target acquisition range performance
- Model the search, detect, recognize, and identify target acquisition cycle
- Compare field performance and model predictions
- Model advanced digital image enhancement techniques like extended range processing, image restoration, and local area contrast enhancement
- Understand the origin and meaning of Army range performance specifications
- Apply models to simulations to represent Computer Generated Forces
- Optimize sampled imagers for target acquisition
- Use NVThermIP, SSCAMIP, and the other NVESD computer programs
- Earn 1.0 CEUs
What You Will Cover
- What the Models Do
- Fourier Transforms
- How the Models Work
- Analyzing Sampled Imagers
- Modeling the Effect of Motion
- Modeling Thermal Imagers
- Selected Topics for Reflected Light Imagers
- Using the Computer Models
Course Materials
Participants receive a copy of class charts and a report covering all of the details discussed in the class. NVTherm IP software is unclassified but access is controlled by the U.S. Army NVESD, Fort Belvoir, Va. Distribution is made only through SENSIAC at a cost of $200. However, participants are encouraged to apply for a copy by completing the request form on the SENSIAC Web site at www.sensiac.gatech.edu/sensiac/sensiac_dba.nvtherm and clicking on the Order Form.
Certificates
This course is an elective for the following:
Prerequisites
A degree in engineering, math, or science is helpful. Participants unfamiliar with infrared systems are strongly urged to attend Infrared Technology and Applications before attending this course.
Instructor
Richard H. Vollmerhausen recently retired from the Army's Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) and is currently consulting. Before retiring, he headed the Model Development Branch at NVESD. During his tenure, the branch updated the Army's target acquisition models to include the effect of sampling on performance and to make other model enhancements in order to predict the performance of advanced technology sensors. Mr. Vollmerhausen is the developer of the Targeting Task Performance Metric which replaces the Johnson Criteria in new Army models. While working at NVESD, he was a project engineer and EO systems analyst for numerous Army weapon systems. His previous work included designing air-to-air missile seekers for the Navy at China Lake and working as an Instrumentation Engineer for Douglas Aircraft on the Saturn/Apollo Program. Mr. Vollmerhausen is the author of two books on electro-optical systems analysis and has published numerous journal and symposium papers.
