Course Description

Driven by more, frequent, and increasingly time definite shipments; complex security and regulatory requirements; increased fuel and labor costs; and severe shortages in labor and capacity, transportation management has become a critical corporate function. Learn the principles, practices, and tools required to address all major issues and tradeoffs in domestic and international transportation including key financial and performance indicators for transportation (RightScores™); logistics network optimization (RightMaps™); routing and scheduling optimization (RightRoutes™); shipment planning and containerization (RightShip™); mode optimization (RightModes™); carrier optimization (RightLines™); third-party selection (RightHelp™); transportation regulations and documentation (RightDocs™); transportation management systems (RightTools™); and transportation organization optimization (RightTeam™).

At the core of World-Class Transportation & DistributionSM is Dr. Frazelle's RightTrips™ model for transportation strategy, part of LRI's RightChain™ methodology for supply chain strategy development. The RightTrips™ model, toolkit, and project initiatives are responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in logistics cost savings. They also serve as the basis for transportation management in nearly every major industry throughout the world. Typical results include 10% to 30% decrease in total logistics cost and significant improvement in on-time delivery.

Program Director

Edward H. Frazelle, Ph.D., founding director of the Georgia Tech Supply Chain & Logistics Institute (SCL) and President and CEO of Logistics Resources International (LRI), directs the Supply Chain Management Series. As an educator, Dr. Frazelle has trained more than 50,000 professionals in the principles of world-class supply chain logistics; as a consultant he has assisted more than 100 corporations and government agencies in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa in their pursuit of world-class supply chains; as an author he has authored, co-authored, and/or contributed to seven books and over twenty articles on supply chain logistics including Supply Chain Strategy, World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling, Facilities Planning, and The Language of Logistics; and as a professor he has lectured at Cornell, Northwestern, the University of Wisconsin, Waseda University, Kyushu Institute of Technology, and the National University of Singapore. His books have been translated into five languages including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Dr. Frazelle's achievements have been recognized by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, the Warehousing Education and Research Council, the Material Handling Institute, and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He was recently named Georgia Tech's Outstanding Professional Educator, and is a former president of the International Material Management Society and member of the board of directors for the Warehousing Education & Research Council.

Supply Chain Management Series

The Supply Chain Management Series (SCMS) are proven, practical, interactive, and dynamic seminars objectively presenting best practices and tools for maximizing financial, service, and quality performance across the entire supply chain. They have been presented since 1991 to more than 10,000 professionals throughout the world. The series includes four courses developed and taught by Dr. Ed Frazelle.

At the core of each course is Dr. Frazelle's RightChain model for supply chain logistics. RightChain projects have yielded more than $2 billion in bottom line impact to date. The RightChain model has been adopted as the supply chain management model by many major corporations in a variety of industries around the world. Typical projects have a bottom line impact ranging from 1% to 5% of sales, inventory reductions between 20% and 40%, and 20% to 50% improvement in perfect order percentage.

SCMS courses are offered live, on-site, and online.

Overall Series Benefits

  • Develop and benchmark supply chain performance metrics
  • Reduce and manage supply chain costs
  • Optimize supply chain networks
  • Optimize supply chain inventory
  • Improve customer service
  • Outsource logistics operations
  • Select supply chain information systems
  • Secure a supply chain

Supply Chain Management Series Approach to Education
The SCMS was created to close the educational gap in supply chain logistics and help prepare professionals to anticipate and solve problems. One major contributing factor to the lack of success in supply chain logistics initiatives is that most professionals working in this discipline are not educated in supply chain logistics. More than 90% of the professionals working in supply chain and logistics lack an undergraduate, graduate, or professional logistics degree, which is a major contributing factor to the lack of success in supply chain logistics initiatives.

The four courses in the series are designed for professionals and managers across the entire supply chain (procurement, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, warehousing, and retail) who need university-based education and credentials to prepare them for increasing responsibilities in logistics and supply chain management.
