Course Description

Discover how to use systems thinking concepts to perform capability gap analyses, design tradeoffs, analysis of alternatives, definition of requirements, or resource allocation. Learn to create quick-turn trade study tools and leverage advanced visualization techniques to foster effective communication between various stakeholders.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn systems thinking concepts for classifying problems, identifying driving factors, and formulating a structured approach.
  • Perform sensitivity analyses and learn to reduce degrees of freedom so that later high fidelity modeling efforts can focus on the critical aspects of the problem.
  • Learn to use dynamic, traceable visualization tools to support stakeholder communication and informed decision making.
  • Be able to explore the decision space and identify the important design tradeoffs
  • Generate and assess multiple alternative solutions within the concept tradespace.
  • Justify that a chosen solution is relevant and adequately addresses customer needs while meeting constraints.

Course Agenda

Day One
  • Systems thinking for complex problems
  • Assumptions and their impacts
Day Two
  • Classes of Problems
  • Identifying a decision-support approach
Day Three
  • Development of quick-turn trade study tools
  • Dynamic Visualization

Course Materials

Participants receive a notebook with lecture notes and a CD-ROM of reference material.
