Examine how modelers develop combat or conflict models and how the results are used. Get the fundamentals, basic computer-based combat models, the difference between and implications of deterministic vs. Monte Carlo models, model support of war games, and efforts to model the overall conflict environment (DIME on PMESII).

3.   Fundamentals of Modeling   (DEF 4001P)

This three day course will focus on the fundamentals of modeling. It will cover a range of topics including philosophy and uses of models, the relationship of models to theory, model foundations, and techniques and formalisms. The course will conclude with discussion on lessons learned over the last 40 years.

4.   Modeling & Simulation for Systems Engineering   (DEF 4003P)

Simulation is the process of designing a model of a system and conducting experiments to understand the behavior of the system and/or evaluate various strategies for the operation of the system. The modeling & simulation life cycle refers to steps that take place during the course of a simulation study, which include problem formulation, conceptual model development, and output data analysis.

9.   Modeling Target Acquisition with Electro-Optical Imagers   (DEF 4008P)

This course describes the theory and application of the target acquisition performance models developed by the Army's Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (Fort Belvoir, VA), specifically how the target acquisition performance (the range at which a target will be detected or identified) is predicted based on the image quality provided by the sensor.

10.   Test & Evaluation Using Modeling & Simulation   (DEF 5002P)

This course is intended as an introduction to M&S applications to T&E for technical and management personnel. It provides an overview of the broad range M&S applications by examples from many T&E programs. Upon completion of this course, the student should understand the range of M&S applications to T&E, how to select and accredit M&S for T&E application, and where to find resources to aid in the process.
